Shower Doors Are Not Created Equally

Dec 12, 2017 | Bathroom Renovations, Plumbing Tips

If you are renovating your bathroom and need shower doors or enclosure, we recommend doing your homework first – we can help! The glass and frames of shower doors come in a variety of shapes, sizes and quality. It’s important to understand the types of metal used and the choices on glass type.

Shapes of Doors

The variety of shapes is a big benefit to homeowners looking to create their own unique bathroom living space.

Some doors have more metal framing than others – some have none at all. We can help you determine what works best for your tile type and size of enclosure. In the Kitchener-Waterloo region, your shower doors (and glass) will be under attack from the hard water we have (unless you’ve installed filtration at your home). Keep this mind!

Shapes of the shower base and glass can be purchase as a single unit that fits in where it needs to go – or you can custom make a solution for a unique look or situation. See some of the options in the gallery below.

Look for framing that has sufficient durability. The better types of frames would be high-quality stainless steel rails and bearings, chrome coated aluminum, and at the higher end we find oil-rubbed bronze (brushed bronze).

Type of Glass

You may notice how shower glass looks slightly green. Some looks more green than others and there’s a good reason for that. The green is cause by iron oxide in the glass. To get a less green-looking glass shower doors, you can either use less thick glass or you can select a brand that contains less iron oxide. When you select your shower door with Chasles Plumbing Professionals, we’ll let you know what your glass options are.

The most common thickness of glass is 3/8″ but you can get 1/4″ (not recommended) and 1/2″ (for a stronger look and feel). There are tradeoffs when selecting glass thickness. 1/2″ will certainly add extra weight on tiled wall. It’s something to consider from a price and aesthetics standpoint. Depending on the type of shower door system you select, different thicknesses will be available.
