Plumbing Then and Now

Oct 3, 2016 | Chasles Plumbing Professionals

Plumbing was one of the ingredients responsible for our modern-day society. Farming was the other major advancement that allowed societies to flourish.

Plumbing originated with ancient civilizations of Persia, Greece, India and the Chinese. These societies realized that in order for people to live together in large quantities, there needed to be a mechanism for acquiring potable (drinkable/usable) water and a method for removing it away from living areas.

Arguably it was the Romans who understood the importance and complexity of plumbing the most. They were responsible for building large systems of aqueducts and wastewater removal systems using lead pipes.

Sadly when Rome fell, so did much of their technological advancements – plumbing was set back hundreds of years. Not until the 1800’s did it again take off again with the creation of large cities necessary for commerce.

Early sewage systems involved dumping waste into open pools. This method was realized to be a source of disease and was soon eliminated as an option for disposal.

Today you will notice sewage treatment facilities located across cities and placed in rural communities. Waste from our homes arrives at these facilities for a cleaning process before it is transported to other bodies of water.

Water delivered into our homes has gone from a system of lead to galvanized piping, then to safer copper. Now we are moving to a less costly and popular plastic materials.

While societies have held the basic understanding of plumbing for some time now, the process and equipment is constantly evolving. We still seek newer and better tools to handle our plumbing needs.
