How to avoid calling an Emergency Plumber, written by an Emergency Plumber

Apr 22, 2016 | Plumbing Tips

Chasles Plumbing Professionals is on call 24/7 for emergency services, however, we encourage everyone to try to avoid these types of situations.

We’ve seen many disasters over the years; many of them can be prevented with some quick visual inspections and simple maintenance.

Here are our top tips:

1.Regular basement checks

We recently had a customer call us after he discovered the cause a foul smell coming from the basement. After two weeks of not going downstairs, he discovered that at some point, the city sewer had backed up. Almost two weeks of raw sewage had entered the basement and it went unnoticed.

This is preventable by regularly doing a visual inspection of the basement floors and any installed plumbing fixtures.

2. Check up on Sump Pumps

We always say, sump pumps are your friends. Don’t let too much time pass before visiting with them.

It’s spring so that means a high level of water that is sitting in the soil. If you have a sump, you’ll notice this water coming up through the hole in your foundation. The sump should pump this outside.

It’s important to check your sump at least every spring and fall. Lift the float lever to ensure it turns on and turns off when the lever drops again.

3.Turn off water when on vacation

Two years ago during our bitter cold weather, a customer of ours went to Florida for a week. The home was nearly 50 years old.

In the 7 days she was away, a pipe in the wall going to the upstairs bathroom had broken. After some time it flooded the basement and cause the furnace to shut off. It only took two days of -20C weather to freeze things solid.

The water had also flooded into the main floor. When she got home, the fire department was called and they had to pry the front door open due to 2 inches of water across the main floor.

When you are away for any extended period of time, remember to shut off your main water supply from the city. It will save you from making that emergency plumbing call to Chasles Plumbing Professionals.

Many emergency situations are preventable, but remember, if you do need us, we’re always here to help – 24/7. (519) 240-0077
